JMH Writing 110 and Media 110 Students Collaborate with Andrew Tidby

Mr. Jamie O'Toole and Mr. Robin Martin have introduced an innovative collaborative project with their Media Studies and Writing classes. Melissa W., a student in Mr. O'Toole's Broadcast Journalism class wrote this about the project in the Monday, October 22nd edition of the District 16 Report. She had this to say:

Writing and Media Studies students at JMH collaborate
By Melissa W.

Students at James M. Hill in Mr. Robin Martin’s Writing 110 class and Mr. Jamie O’Toole’s Media Studies 120 class are collaborating their interests and talents to create television shows. They will be working with special guest Andrew Tidby, of Tidby Pictures Production Company throughout the semester.

Thoughts on the collaboration began last year between Mr. Martin and Mr. O’Toole. The addition of Andrew Tidby was an unexpected bonus. “Mr. Martin and I always saw the opportunity to get the classes together and when we had Andrew Tidby come in, he made the idea possible,” said Mr. O’Toole.

Mr. Martin will be working with his writing class to produce a script for the television shows. The scripts will then be handed on to Mr. O’Toole’s Media Studies students, who will produce a video.

Students in both classes are really excited about this project. While working in groups, students came up with their own ideas for television shows. Andrew Tidby helped start the project off on the right foot. “With his contagious energy, it’s hard not to get excited,” said Mr. Martin.

After working with the students last week, Andrew Tidby has returned home to St. John. However, his work with this project will continue. Eventually, Martin and O’Toole will have their groups post to an online blog, which will also be accessible to Tidby in St. John. This will allow both teachers, as well as Tidby, to comment on the students’ work.

Originally, both teachers just wanted to do a very special project, something that would make the students proud of their own work and show off their creative abilities. However, Tidby has become so impressed with the ideas and the amount of creativity shown by the students, that he is now looking forward to bringing his production company to the Miramichi, and helping students’ ideas come to life.

With Tidby’s involvement, the students have now been given the opportunity to work with professionals outside the classroom. “When given the right medium to express their ideas, they will want to do a good job,” said Mr. Martin. The project is now underway and it will be interesting to see its eventual outcome.

I thought Mr.Tidby had plenty of great ideas. I like how he took the time to talk to us. I can’t believe we get to make a TV show! I’ve always wanted to be on a television show. The project is going to be fun!

Meeting Tidby was pretty cool. It would be pretty fun getting to make a TV show with him.

Turns out that disney studios is actually making Sands of Time into a movie, so making that project would be a legal issue. Instead we've decided to go with an ongoing show set in our school and continuing the philosophie of Seinfeld in the 'show about nothing' tradition.

The presentation was very informative and interesting .Especially because I have been thinking of going to film school. We also changed our idea ( I can’t believe Disney is actually doing the sands of time movie). Our new idea is great, even better then our sands of time one. I can’t wait to start to film a pilot of it.

I thought the presentation with Andrew Tidby was very interesting. He brought up some good stories, about how he met Robert De Niro, and Wayne Gretzky. He made me realize that film making can be a fun and an interesting career.

Hey Mr. Tidby! I want to tell you all about our new ideas for “I’d Rather Be Dead”. But apparently that’s not the topic! And I’m not allowed to. So instead I am obliged to commend you for your visit to our school. I really enjoyed it. Your presentation was awesome. Our group is dying to share ideas with you again! We will Talk to you soon!

I thought it was pretty interesting when Andrew Tidby came and spoke for our classes. He was full life, excitement, and adventure. When he told us about meeting Robert Deniro, Wayne Gretzky, and Milla Jovovich I was amazed! Hopefully Andrew Tidby comes and visits again!

I’m with Nathan on that, I’d really rather be talking about “I’d Rather be Dead”, because we all already know your presentation was amazing. I’d really like to thank you for coming to our school because it actually made our teachers give us a project where we have loads of creative freedom instead of the same boring “do this weird random topic that nobody understands or it’s wrong” project. So thanks for the presentation and I hope to be getting back to you soon with new ideas for the show and the pilot.

Tidby was a great guest speaker in our class. I heard (and enjoyed) his life stories about himself, before or during his career. I thought it was cool how he turned down a good sounding job in New York, but still made it better off than before.
